AmeriCorps Volunteer

Picture
Hello, my name is Thomas Miles, and I am the new AmeriCorps service member serving at the Harrison County Historical Society. I am a Clarksburg native, and my family runs a small trucking company called Miles Enterprises. I graduated from Robert C. Byrd High School in 2015 and proceeded to attend WVU where I graduated in May of 2020 with my B.A. in History and a minor in Political Science. My academic research interests tend to focus on labor histories looking at how the working class influences the world around us. My undergraduate capstone research paper, "Japanese Economic Aggression, Organized Labor’s Resistance, & the Path to World War II," received the WVU History Department’s Romine Award and was published in the first edition of the West Virginia University Historic Review.

While I plan on continuing my education, I chose to serve with AmeriCorps because I really want to have practical experience applying the skills I learned in college outside of academia and wanted to be near my family during this pandemic. The Harrison County Historical Society called to me because not only would I be able to serve my local community, but better connect with the history and culture I grew up around. Having grown up here, I feel like a lot of our local history and culture is lost on the youth here as organizations like ours face constantly face manpower and funding challenges especially during trying times like these. I sincerely hope that my service here can help engage more members of our community with local history and inspire people to contribute to the preservation and celebration of our past.
